How Cannabis Professionals Actually Meet Each Other

By CHNANY

If you ask someone how they broke into cannabis or landed a key partnership, the answer is rarely “through a cold email.” In New York especially, cannabis remains a relationship-driven industry where introductions, referrals, and shared rooms matter.

So how do cannabis professionals actually meet each other?

At large conferences and industry expos. The cannabis industry offers everything from highly produced, corporate-style conferences to trade shows packed with operators, investors, and service providers. These events create density — a lot of decision-makers in one place — and visibility still counts.

At smaller networking gatherings

There are also more intimate meetups and recurring association events, including those hosted by CHNANY (Cannabis & Hemp Networking Association of New York). When professionals see each other consistently, conversations move beyond small talk. Familiarity builds trust.

In social settings that feel less formal

Cannabis is unique in that some of the most meaningful connections happen while “breaking bread” — or sharing a joint — in relaxed environments. These moments often strip away the pitch and allow for more honest conversations.

Through mutual introductions

“You should meet…” remains one of the most powerful phrases in the industry. Warm introductions travel faster and carry more credibility than cold outreach.

Across service-provider networks

Lawyers connect clients to accountants. Consultants introduce operators to compliance advisors. Real estate professionals connect founders to build-out teams. Entire ecosystems form through these overlapping relationships.

Through licensing cohorts and shared processes

Going through applications, regulatory hurdles, or educational programs together often creates durable bonds. Shared stress builds connection.

From prior careers

Many cannabis professionals entered from adjacent industries — finance, hospitality, tech, agriculture, healthcare, government. Those previous networks frequently become the first bridge into cannabis.

Through advocacy and policy work

Community boards, public meetings, and working groups often become unexpected networking spaces.

The industry spans the full spectrum — from polished, corporate gatherings to casual, community-centered sessions. But the common thread isn’t the format. It’s repetition and presence. Professionals tend to meet in spaces where they can return, reconnect, and build credibility over time.

That’s part of the reason recurring forums matter. Organizations like CHNANY exist to create consistent opportunities for professionals across New York’s cannabis and hemp industries to meet, re-meet, and strengthen those connections.

In cannabis, relationships rarely begin with a transaction. They begin with a conversation — and often, with simply showing up.
