Turning Up the Lights Only Works If the Room Can Keep Up

The lighting conversation in commercial cannabis has changed. A few years ago the question was whether you had enough light to grow a healthy plant. Now the fixtures can push far past that, and the real question is how much of that light the plant can actually put to work.

Fixtures have gotten stronger, and the research has gotten a lot better at telling us what cannabis does with the extra intensity. The short version: plants can use more than most people running these rooms assume. The longer version is where the money is, because you don't get more flower just by cranking the dial.

Cannabis wants more light than the old playbook allowed

For years the standard targets were conservative. Study after study has since blown past them. Rodriguez-Morrison (2021), Sae-Tang (2024), Holweg (2024), Nielson (2024): different facilities, different conditions, same trend. Push the intensity up and yield goes up with it. If you're still running the numbers you were taught five years ago, you're probably leaving flower on the table.

Now the catch. Light drives photosynthesis, but photosynthesis only moves as fast as the slowest input in the room. Turn the fixtures up and the plant immediately demands more of everything else: CO₂, water, nutrients, airflow, and a temperature and humidity envelope that can hold up under the load. Let one of those lag and the extra light doesn't convert. You just paid for photons the plant couldn't use, and sometimes you paid for stress on top of it.

So before you touch the dial, figure out what breaks first when you do.

More intensity raises the stakes on spectrum

Red is the workhorse. It drives photosynthesis harder than anything else on the spectrum, which is exactly why it's everywhere in horticultural fixtures. But once you're running high intensities, a red-heavy spectrum starts working against you at the top of the canopy. Photobleaching shows up, depending on the cultivar and how the room is dialed in.

That's a big reason serious operators have moved toward broader spectrums. Not to chase one magic recipe, but because a balanced spectrum holds up better when you're pushing hard. There is no universal best spectrum, and anyone selling you one is selling you something. Genetics, canopy density, temperature, airflow: they all change how your plants take the light. The right spectrum is the one that fits how you actually run the room.

The top of the canopy is the easy part

Everybody watches the colas. That's the part you can see and the part you can measure. But a dense cannabis plant eats most of the overhead light before it ever reaches the lower bud sites, and those sites can produce real flower. They're just starved.

Growers close that gap two ways. Some manage the canopy itself with pruning, defoliation, and spacing to open the plant up and let light down. Others add fixtures under the canopy where the overhead rig can't reach. Both work. Both are more effort than turning up the top lights. What you're after is uniformity: more of the plant contributing to the harvest instead of a bright top sitting over a dead bottom.

Build the strategy around the whole room

The biggest lesson from the last few years of research is that the highest PPFD number and the brightest fixture on the spec sheet aren't the goal. The room is the goal.

Before you push intensity, be honest about a few things. Can your environmental controls actually keep up with faster photosynthesis? Does your spectrum match what you're trying to produce? Is the light reaching the parts of the plant that need it? And is your rig delivering the same output cycle after cycle, or is it drifting as it ages?

Getting those right will move your yield more than another 100 µmol at the canopy ever will. The operators pulling the best numbers aren't chasing a single figure. They've got intensity, spectrum, environment, and canopy management all pulling in the same direction, and that's what puts consistent, high-quality flower on the table cycle after cycle.
